    • Walter clearly enjoyed life in the military because his record indicates that he re-signed every year up until 1916. In December 1914, he was promoted to Lance-Corporal and embarked from Southampton to France where he was posted to Rouen in Normandy. In March 1915, he was treated for Frost Bite and Rheumatism and in April of that year, he was wounded and transferred to Wimereux. He was retuned to England on 28 April 1915.
      Walter's discharge papers described his Military Character as "Exemplary" and his trade as a "Skilled Labourer".
