Name Salem Chef Born Abt 1895 - There is some uncertainty as to the exact origins of Salem but it may have been Oman. There is also uncertainty around his exact name. It is unlikely that his birth name is "Chef" as it was propably simplified from his original Arabic name, which family descendants believe may have been "Seifi" or "Siefi".

Renamed as the Ioanna in 1934, it was finally sunk by an air attack at Patras, Greece, on 21 April 1941. Salem Chef was a fireman on the ships.

The larger photograph to the left is of Salem Chef, date unknown. Top right in colour, is Salem's first wife Elizabeth Maud Law. Elizabeth died in the first quarter of 1925 when she was only 24. Her son Salem (jnr) was born in February 1925, so perhaps these events were connected.
The photograph at bottom right, is of Salem and his second wife, Lily Williams (nee Jones). I have been advised by another family member that this photo was probably taken in the 1960's.
