- John was a Leading Stoker serving on board HMS 'Racoon'. During the early hours of 9 January 1918, she was en-route from Liverpool to Lough Swilly to take up anti-submarine and convoy duties in the Northern Approaches. In heavy seas and snow blizzards, she struck McKerrigan's Rock off the Garvan Isles, Donegal and sank with the loss of all hands.
