Obverse and reverse of a copper halfpenny token manufactured in the names of Henry Symonds, William Winterbotham, James Ridgway and David Holt, 1794. [Note: Earlier - and much rarer examples, show the Newgate gaol image with a flat roof]
Trials for sedition in late-eighteenth-century England were not uncommon, and the country could in no way be considered a safe place to speak out against government (or indeed, the Church). Those who continued to express dissent, however, did so not just in printed works and pamphlets, but also in metal.

Whether for collectors or for commercial use, the possibilities of a freely-circulating medium, almost impossible to police, were obvious to those who wished to spread propaganda against the state, and although the manufacturers and engravers of tokens would happily take commissions from such parties, the issuers could if necessary acquire the necessary machinery to manufacture them alone. Associations of dissenters who felt themselves particular notable, therefore, or those who wished to celebrate one of the few triumphs against the status quo, often had recourse to this form of advertising in copper.

The danger and isolation of dissent led to a grimly humourous camaraderie that makes these tokens witty, but often hard to grasp. This coin or token, for example, mimics the commercial issues that invited the buying public to redeem their tokens for silver at the issuer's business address ("Payable at the residence of..."), but the 'address' given by the reverse design is Newgate Gaol, because the four men named had been imprisoned there for sedition the previous year.

The joke hangs on the assumption that the prisoners' names would have been known to anyone who happened to receive the token. This is evidence in itself that the doings of revolutionaries were the subject of common report in London.

Tetbury Today
Tetbury Today
This collage of four photographs, shows West Street (previously Harper Street) as it is today (2006).

Top Left: A view of West Street looking west. On the right hand side of the street (opposite the parked cars), many of the old cottages have been demolished to make room for a car park. The cottages that now stand just beyond the car park (on the right) were built in the early 1990's on the site of the Prince of Wales Inn, known locally as the "Drum and Monkey".

Top Right: Still looking west, this view, further along West Street is of some of the original cottages of "Harper Street".

Bottom Left: This photograph is looking east towards the town centre. On the left, are the relatively new cottages that replaced the Prince of Wales Inn, with the new car park beyond that. In the centre, the spire of the parish church of St Mary the Virgin can clearly be seen.

Bottom Right: From it's junction with "Harper Street" this view, looking west is of Cotton's Lane.

TOZER, William Henry - Challenge of Birth Legitimacy, 1924
This document is the challenge made by Robert & Christopher Drew to the legitimacy of the birth of William Tozer to Mary Jane Winsor. It declares that as Mary Jane Winsor was unmarried, the corrected registration of the birth should read the name as William Henry Winsor.

The underlying reason for this challenge is unknown and neither is the relationship between the Drews and the Winsors or Tozers. William would have been 61 years of age at the time the challenge was made.

Which database fields are searched

Media items are images, documents of various types, and even recordings or videos that are attached to people, events, and places, and are defined in a database table. This page searches three descriptive fields in that table:

  1. Title, which is no more than one line long. All media items have a title.
(The title of each media item is listed in the "Description" column in the search results, and serves as a hyperlink that displayes the full media item.)
  2. Description is longer than the title, but usually no more than a few lines long. Media items should have a description, but many do not.
(The description of each media item is also listed in the "Description" column the search results.)
  3. BodyText is a block of text that
    • Can be arbitrarily large,
    • Typically supplies additional information about a media item, and
    • Can have rich formatting (i.e. headings, paragraphs, bold text, colors, etc.)
(The BodyText value of a media item can be seen only if you view the full media item.)

Significantly, not all media items are individual files; the entire text of some stories is stored in the media item's BodyText field rather than in a separate Word, PDF, or HTML document.

What's in the 'Gallery'
The Gallery shows just thumbnail images; no descriptive text to identify media items. It may be useful only for photos. Significantly, media items without thumbnails do not appear in the Gallery.

Media items that are not likely to have thumbnails include

  1. Non-images such as Word documents, PDF's, HTML pages, etc.
  2. Images that were scanned from books and other documents. In truth, it wouldn't be hard to generate thumbnails for those images, and some do have thumbnails, but it isn't generally worthwhile to do so, since thumbnails of scanned documents are usually too small to reveal anything useful about the document.
This help message window can be dragged out of the way, and left on the screen as long as you need it.
