COX's army prepare for the long journey to the front lines of Europe.
COX's army prepare for the long journey to the front lines of Europe.
This photograph was taken around 1915, probably not long after Edwin Cox had signed up for military service. It shows the troops on board the train which is to take them east to Thunder Bay for the voyage to Europe. Clearly in high spirits, little did they know that many of them would never return. The various slogans depict such messages as "Kaiser Bill We Are Coming"; "Kenora Roughnecks"; "Kenora Die Hards" and of course, "Cox's Army".

If anyone recognises a face, please let me know.

COX, Florence Ada c.1900
This photograph of Florence, was probably taken around 1900. It appears that Florence has just graduated. As she was a music teacher, perhaps she had graduated from Teacher Training College? The photo was taken at the studios of J. Blackmore, of 52 Battersea Road, Easton, Bristol.

COX, James Henry and his wife SMITH, Emma Jane
On the left is a photograph of James Henry Cox. At a guess, I would say he looks about 40 and so this would place the photograph around 1895. On the right is James' wife Emma Jane Cox (nee Smith). She looks slighlty older to me and so it is probable that these two photographs were not taken at the same time.

William and his family arrived in Moreton Bay aboard the "Shackamaxon" on 25 November 1859. They, and their fellow travellers, were immediately transferred to the steamer, "Breadalbane" for the short voyage to Brisbane, arriving the following day. This article, marking the arrival of the immigrants, was published in the "Local Intelligence" column, page 2, of The Moreton Bay Courier, on 26 November 1859.
